The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has long been a popular tourist destination particularly in the summer months when temperatures rise well above 30 degrees. Some parts of the island have unfortunately been overrun by tourism mainly due to British ex-pats, but there is still plenty of beauty to enjoy with a good pair of walking boots and some sun screen.
Diving
Cyprus is a great diving island with many attractions to see hidden under the water, the RS Zenobia shipwreck in particular is a something not to be missed. The 11,000-tonne roll-on roll-off ferry was on its maiden voyage in June 1980 when it sank just off the Cypriot coast, taking its entire cargo, including more than 100 lorries, 40 metres down to the seabed. Now it has become one of the most exciting and alluring shipwrecks in the world, helping to establish Cyprus on the scuba diving map.
Green Line Walk
The “Green Line” is the dividing line between southern Greek Cyprus and northern Turkish Cyprus. The Venetians built a rounded wall around Nicosia and the Green Line — the line that the Turks and Greek Cypriots fought down to in the war — divides it, running from one side to the other, west to east. As you walk along the Green Line you can see buildings that were bombed or shot up during the conflict. This is a good chance to soak up some of the chequered history of Cyprus and understand the island better for it.
